Burgau Holiday Rental: Your Guide to the Best Accommodation

Why Choose Burgau for Your Algarve Holiday

Burgau is the village most regular Algarve travellers eventually move on to once the bigger resorts have lost their charm. It sits midway between Lagos and Sagres on the south-western coast, tumbling down a hillside towards a sheltered sandy beach. The fishing tradition is still very much alive — small wooden boats are pulled up onto the sand each morning, and the day's catch goes straight to the village restaurants a hundred metres up the cobbled main street.

Unlike the high-rise developments further east, Burgau has been protected from over-development. The historic core is a maze of whitewashed cottages, blue-trimmed windows and bougainvillea-draped lanes. New building is restricted, large hotels are absent, and the rhythm of life still revolves around the beach, the bakery and the local bar.

For a holiday that feels authentically Portuguese — without sacrificing the comfort of modern villas, fast Wi-Fi and stocked supermarkets nearby — Burgau is hard to beat.

What Makes Burgau Special

  • Praia de Burgau — a sheltered, south-facing sandy cove tucked between two cliffs. Calm enough for kids and snorkellers, with a lifeguard service in summer, beach loungers, and three or four casual beach restaurants where you can eat with your toes in the sand.
  • A working fishing village — not a museum piece. Watch boats land in the early morning, octopus pots stacked along the slipway, and locals chatting outside the small grocers.
  • Cobbled streets and traditional architecture — protected village core with no large blocks. Genuinely walkable, beautifully lit at night.
  • Coastal walks — the dramatic cliff path west to Cabanas Velhas and east to Praia da Luz are among the best short walks on the entire south coast.
  • Central location — 10 minutes to Luz and Salema, 15 to Lagos, 25 to Sagres. You can base yourself here and explore the whole western Algarve without long drives.
  • Restaurants out of proportion to its size — for a village of around 1,000 people, Burgau punches far above its weight at dinner. More on that below.
  • Where Burgau Sits Compared to Other Algarve Villages

People often compare Burgau, Luz and Salema. A quick guide:

  • Luz is the busiest — bigger, more shops, a long promenade and a wider beach. Best for first-time Algarve visitors who want amenities on the doorstep. See our Praia da Luz accommodation guide.
  • Salema is the smallest and most low-key — beautiful beach, fewer restaurants, more residential. A great base if you want quiet, but you'll drive for variety.
  • Burgau sits between the two — enough restaurants and life to feel social, small enough to keep its village soul.
  • Best Accommodation Near Burgau

A holiday rental near Burgau works better than a hotel for almost every trip type: families want kitchens and pools, couples want privacy, surf groups want outdoor space for boards and wetsuits. Both of our villas are an easy 10-minute drive from Burgau beach.

Coastal Sanctuary Villa — A 3-bedroom retreat on a private 2-acre estate in Barão de São Miguel, just up the hill from Burgau. Sleeps 6 in comfort, with a large heated private pool, designer kitchen, panoramic countryside views and a dedicated office for anyone working remotely. The size of the plot is the difference-maker — kids run, adults disappear with a book, and you genuinely feel like the place is yours. Perfect for families, multi-generational trips, and groups of friends.

Casa Onda — A beautifully renovated 2-bedroom villa on the Santo António golf resort in Budens, about 10 minutes from Burgau by car. Shared heated pool, golf-course views, modern interior, ideal for couples or a family of four. Excellent value and a quiet base for an Algarve week.

Both come with linen, towels, fast Wi-Fi, air conditioning, secure parking, and the personal service of dealing direct with the owner-manager — not a corporate call centre.

    Eating Out in Burgau

For its size, Burgau's restaurant scene is remarkable. A short list of where to head:

  • Restaurante Mira-Mar — Classic Algarve cooking with sea views from the terrace. Order grilled sea bream or cataplana de marisco.
  • Adega Casa Grande — A locals' favourite up in the village for grilled fish and meats, with house wine by the jug.
  • Beach Bar Burgau — Right on the sand. Best at sunset for a chilled vinho verde.
  • The Boatyard — A laid-back spot run by a friendly British-Portuguese family, well known for pizzas, brunches and live music nights.
  • Bar Toca — A small, late-opening bar tucked into the lanes. Great for a final glass after dinner.
  • For self-catering nights, the village has a small grocer, a daily fresh-bread delivery, and a fishmonger when the boats land. For a bigger shop, Intermarché Budens is 5 minutes away by car.

Things to Do from a Burgau Base

  • Beach hop — Burgau itself, then Salema, Cabanas Velhas, Boca do Rio, Luz and Porto de Mós, all within 15 minutes.
  • Coastal walking — the path from Burgau west to Cabanas Velhas takes about 45 minutes one-way and is one of the most underrated coastal walks in Europe.
  • Boat trips — kayak and SUP tours leave from Burgau beach in summer; bigger dolphin and cave trips run from Lagos marina.
  • Surfing — west-coast breaks like Cordoama and Amado are 25 minutes away. See our West Algarve surf guide.
  • Golf — half a dozen courses within a 20-minute drive, including Santo António and Espiche.
  • Day trips — Lagos historic centre, the Sagres fortress, the lighthouse at Cabo de São Vicente, and the Monchique hills for mountain views.
  • When to Visit Burgau

  • Spring (April–June) — wildflowers, mild 20–24 °C days, sea warming up by late May. Quiet, easy parking, and most restaurants open.
  • Summer (July–August) — peak. Lively, warm sea, beach buzzing. Book early; this is the only window where Burgau feels busy.
  • Autumn (September–October) — many people's favourite. Warm sea, fewer crowds, perfect light.
  • Winter (November–March) — quiet but very much open. Mild days (15–18 °C), great walking weather, and the lowest rates of the year.
  • Book Direct for the Best Rates

When you book direct accommodation in Burgau through us, you skip the 15–20% in platform fees that Airbnb and Booking add on top. That difference goes back into the room rate, or buys you a long dinner at Mira-Mar instead. You also get a real human contact: we'll arrange airport transfers, recommend the right beach for the day's wind, book your surf lessons, and step in if anything needs attention during the stay.
