The easiest family beach on the western stretch
Praia da Luz is the practical choice on this coast. The beach runs around 800 metres, faces south, and is sheltered enough that the sea slopes in gently rather than dumping — which is why it is the beach parents on the Western Algarve keep coming back to. Behind it sits Rocha Negra, the dark volcanic mass that gives the bay its silhouette and every photograph of Luz its horizon.
Unlike Burgau, Luz has a proper seafront: a flat promenade of cafés and restaurants, lifeguards through the summer, sunbeds, toilets, and a playground within reach. It is about ten minutes and six kilometres west of Lagos, so it is also the easiest place here to arrive at without a plan.

Why it works for families
The bay is sheltered from the Atlantic swell that hammers the west coast, the bottom is sandy, and the slope is gentle enough that toddlers can wade while older children swim without disappearing over a shelf. Lifeguards patrol in season. There are toilets, cafés you can walk to barefoot, and a playground nearby — the small logistics that decide whether a beach day is relaxing or not.
It is also the beach that works when the forecast does not. When a big north-west swell shuts the west coast down, Luz is usually still swimmable.
Getting there and parking
From Lagos centre it is roughly six kilometres west — take the EN125 towards Vila do Bispo and turn off for Luz, about ten minutes by car. Eva Transportes runs a bus from Lagos bus station several times a day; the ride takes around twenty-five minutes and the stop is a short walk from the sand.
There is paid parking within easy reach of the beach and free parking up in the village streets. Luz handles cars far better than Burgau does, which is part of why it absorbs the July and August crowds.
Beyond the beach
The clifftop walk west towards Burgau is the local classic — under an hour and a half at a steady pace, with the coast opening up behind you the whole way. In the other direction the path climbs Rocha Negra itself for the view back down over the bay.
The bay also happens to be a good spot for a first stand-up paddle session or a gentle beginner surf on small days, which is not something you can say about most of the beaches twenty minutes north of here.
What Luz is not
Luz is developed. It has apartment blocks, a resort feel in places, and in high summer it gets genuinely busy. If what you are after is an untouched village, Burgau or Salema will suit you better.
What Luz gives you instead is convenience — and if you are travelling with small children or without a car for part of the trip, that is worth more than atmosphere.

Is Praia da Luz safe for swimming with children?
It is one of the safest beaches on this coast for children. The bay is sheltered from Atlantic swell, the bottom is sand, the slope is gradual, and lifeguards are on duty during the summer season. As anywhere on this coast, check the flags on the day.
How far is Praia da Luz from Lagos?
About ten minutes by car — roughly six kilometres west along the EN125. By bus from Lagos station it is around twenty-five minutes.
Can you surf at Praia da Luz?
On small days, yes — it is a gentle spot for beginners and good for stand-up paddle. It is not a performance surf beach; for that you drive fifteen to twenty minutes to the west coast breaks around Sagres, Cordoama or Bordeira.
Is Praia da Luz busy in summer?
Yes, July and August are busy, and the promenade is at its fullest in the evenings. Shoulder season — May, June, September, October — gives you the same beach with a fraction of the people.
