Burgau Holiday Rentals — A Fishing Village That Never Grew Up
A whitewashed cove village between Lagos and Sagres
Burgau is the reason people fall for the Western Algarve rather than the Algarve. It is a genuine fishing village — a tangle of steep, whitewashed lanes tipping down to a small sheltered cove, with headlands on either side that break the Atlantic swell before it reaches the sand. There is no high-rise, no strip, no resort gate. In the evening, boats sit pulled up at the top of the beach and the restaurants in the side streets fill with a mix of Portuguese families and people who have been coming back for twenty years.
It sits in the Vila do Bispo municipality, roughly twenty minutes' drive from Lagos in one direction and twenty minutes from Sagres in the other — which is the whole point. You get a quiet village to come home to and two very different day trips within half an hour.

The beach and the water
Praia do Burgau is a compact south-facing cove. Because rocky headlands flank both sides, the water is usually noticeably calmer here than on the exposed west-coast beaches twenty minutes away — which makes it a swimming beach rather than a surfing one. On still mornings it can be glassy enough for snorkelling along the rocks at either end.
It is a small beach, so it does fill up in July and August, particularly at weekends. The trick is the same one locals use: be down there before eleven or after five, and spend the middle of the day somewhere with shade.
Parking, and why it matters here
Burgau was built for boats, not cars. There is a small free car park at the village entrance — think in the region of thirty spaces — plus limited street parking, and on summer weekends both are gone by mid-morning. The lanes down to the beach are steep and narrow, and are not somewhere you want to be reversing a hire car in August.
If you are staying nearby rather than in the village itself, the practical approach is to park at the top and walk down. It takes a few minutes and the view on the way down is the reason you came.
Eating and the evening
The restaurants are tucked into the side streets rather than lined up along a promenade, which is what keeps the village feeling like a village. Expect grilled fish, cataplana, a handful of places doing a very good sunset drink, and menus that still change with what came in that morning.
Nothing here is late-night. Burgau's evening is a long dinner and a walk back up the hill. If you want bars and a marina, Lagos is twenty minutes away — which is close enough for a night out and far enough that you cannot hear it.
Walking the coast
Burgau is one of the best walking bases on this stretch of coast. The clifftop paths east towards Praia da Luz and west towards Cabanas Velhas and Boca do Rio give you the whole geology of the Western Algarve in a couple of hours — layered cliffs, empty coves and, at Boca do Rio, the remains of a Roman settlement being slowly reclaimed by the beach.
Come in spring and the cliff tops are covered in wildflowers. Come in October and you will have most of it to yourself.

Staying near Burgau
We do not have a villa inside Burgau village itself — and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. Both of our houses are a short drive away in the same quiet corner of Vila do Bispo, which in practice means you get a pool, a terrace and somewhere to park, and you drive down to Burgau for dinner.

Is Burgau good for families?
Yes, with one caveat. The cove is sheltered and calm for swimming, which is ideal, but the village is built on a hill with steep, narrow lanes — so it suits families with children who can walk it better than families pushing a buggy. If you want flat access straight onto a promenade, Praia da Luz is ten minutes away.
Do you need a car in Burgau?
For a holiday based in the Western Algarve, yes. There is a bus service between Lagos and Vila do Bispo that stops nearby, but it is infrequent. The beaches, surf spots and villages that make this region worth visiting are spread out, and a car turns a two-hour bus decision into a fifteen-minute drive.
How far is Burgau from Faro Airport?
Around an hour and ten minutes by car via the A22 motorway. There is no direct public transport — the alternative is a train or bus to Lagos and then a taxi or local bus for the last stretch.
When is the best time to visit Burgau?
May, June, September and October. The sea is warm enough from June through October, the crowds and the parking problem are limited to July and August, and September in particular gives you summer sea temperatures with spring-level quiet.
