Remote Work & Long Stay Rental in Burgau, Algarve

Work Remotely from the Western Algarve

The way work happens has changed permanently for millions of people, and one of the quiet winners has been southern Portugal. The Algarve has the things remote workers actually need — fast fibre internet almost everywhere, a friendly time zone, low cost of living, reliable sunshine, safe streets, a strong English-speaking professional community, and visa rules that make medium-term stays straightforward for almost any nationality.

The western end of the Algarve adds something extra: nature. Within ten minutes of closing your laptop you can be paddling out at an Atlantic surf beach, walking a cliff path above an empty cove, hitting a tee shot over a ravine, or sitting down to grilled sea bass at a village restaurant. The east of the region has the bigger nomad community in Lagos; the west has the lifestyle that makes you actually want to stay.

This is a guide to making the western Algarve your base for a month, a season, or even longer.

Why Choose the Algarve for Remote Work

  • 300+ days of sunshine a year — and a real, distinct winter that's mild (15–18 °C average) rather than depressing.
  • Fast, reliable Wi-Fi — both our villas have fibre connections that handle 4K video calls comfortably.
  • Affordable cost of living — eating out, groceries and transport are significantly cheaper than the UK, Ireland, Netherlands or Germany.
  • Time zone friendly — GMT in winter, GMT+1 in summer. Overlaps cleanly with the UK and Western Europe and gives a workable morning overlap with US East Coast.
  • English widely spoken — particularly in Lagos, Luz and Burgau, where you can run errands, see a doctor or get a haircut entirely in English if needed.
  • Easy entry for many nationalities — UK and US visitors can stay 90 days in 180; longer stays are covered by Portugal's D7 and Digital Nomad visas.
  • World-class lifestyle — surf, golf, hiking, dining, and a coastline that genuinely never gets old.
  • Our Remote Work-Friendly Villas

Coastal Sanctuary Villa is the best fit for serious remote work. The dedicated home office has a proper desk, an ergonomic chair, monitor mount points, and natural light all day. With three bedrooms, you can also separate work and living spaces cleanly — partner or family in one zone, your video calls in another. After work, walk straight into the heated pool, or drive 10 minutes to Burgau beach. Fibre internet, Smart TV, ceiling fans, air conditioning, and a kitchen that makes long stays genuinely comfortable.

Casa Onda suits a single remote worker or a couple where only one is working. Quiet golf-resort setting on the edge of Budens village, shared heated pool, well-set-up workspace in the second bedroom, strong Wi-Fi, and excellent value for stays of a month or more.

    Long Stay Rates

For stays of 28 nights or more we offer significantly discounted nightly rates compared to short stays — typically a 25–40% reduction depending on the season. Mid-stay benefits as standard:

  • Weekly cleaning and fresh linen included
  • Local SIM card and Portuguese banking guidance
  • Restaurant, activity and route recommendations on tap
  • Direct WhatsApp contact with the owner-manager throughout
  • Help with everything from car hire to surf lessons to long walks
  • Get in touch with your dates and we'll come back with a tailored quote.

A Realistic Remote Work Day in the Algarve

  • 7:30 — Coffee on the terrace, quick surf check on Surfline.
  • 8:00–9:00 — Desk start. Two hours of focused deep work before anyone else is online.
  • 10:30 — Quick swim in the pool.
  • 11:00–13:30 — Calls and collaboration window with European colleagues.
  • 13:30–15:00 — Long, slow lunch. Beach picnic on a Tuesday isn't unusual.
  • 15:00–17:30 — Calls with anyone further west; afternoon focus block.
  • 18:00 — Off the laptop. Walk to Burgau, sunset session at Amado, golf at Espiche, or a long dinner in Luz.
  • It's not a holiday and it's not a grind. It's a different relationship with the working week.

    Visa & Practicalities

  • UK & US visitors — 90 days in any 180-day rolling period, visa-free.
  • EU citizens — no time limit; register as a resident after 90 days if staying long-term.
  • Portugal's Digital Nomad Visa (D8) — covers stays of up to 12 months for remote workers earning at least 4x the Portuguese minimum wage.
  • D7 visa — the well-known "passive income" residency route, suitable if you have rental, dividend or pension income.
  • We can recommend immigration and tax lawyers based in Lagos who specialise in supporting long-stay arrivals.

    Co-working and Cafés Nearby

The western Algarve has a quietly growing co-working scene, mostly in Lagos, 15–20 minutes from both villas:

  • Cowork Algarve (Lagos) — well-equipped, friendly, regular community events.
  • Mar Workspace (Lagos) — newer, more design-led space.
  • A handful of laptop-friendly cafés in Lagos, Luz and Burgau — ask us for the current list.
  • For most weeks, working from the villa is the obvious choice — quieter, no commute, swim breaks. Going into Lagos once or twice a week for the community side of things works well for many guests.

    A Couple's Workation

Many of our long-stay guests are couples where one partner is working full-time and the other is taking the week as more of a holiday. The villas suit this pattern especially well — the working partner gets a real office and a quiet villa, the non-working partner has the pool, the beach and a car at their disposal. Evenings and weekends become the trip.

Mid-week, take the laptop to Praia da Luz for a long lunch, book a surf lesson, or just enjoy fresh seafood in Sagres.

Best Time of Year for a Remote Work Stay

  • Spring (March–May) — our most popular long-stay window. Warm but not hot, wildflowers, low rates.
  • Autumn (September–November) — equally good. Warm sea, fewer crowds.
  • Winter (December–February) — mild, peaceful, cheapest rates of the year. Excellent if you want to write a book.
  • Summer (June–August) — works for families combining workation with school holidays, but expect peak rates and busier beaches.
  • Ready to Make the Move (For a While)?

Get in touch with your rough dates and we'll send back a long-stay quote, a list of recommended onboarding contacts (bank, SIM, doctor, lawyer if needed), and answers to anything else you want to ask before booking.
